METU Fast-Track: From Bachelor’s to Master’s

Dear Students,

4th-year students may take graduate courses before graduation and thus start their master’s studies early. Information on this opportunity, together with additional information on research opportunities, is provided below.

Taking Graduate Courses (7th- and 8th-Semester Students)

7th- and 8th-semester students may take graduate courses as courses outside their curriculum with NI (Not Included) status. Courses taken with NI status count toward the course load of the relevant semester, are not included in the grade point average, and do not affect graduation even if the student fails them.

If students are later admitted to a master’s program, courses taken with NI status and completed with a grade of CC or above may be counted toward the relevant program upon the student’s request.

Students are required to contact the instructor of the course and their advisors before registering for the course.

For detailed information on the courses available, please visit the websites of our graduate schools:

Additional Information: 5 Ways to Get Involved in Research

Students who wish to gain research experience in preparation for master’s studies may also benefit from the opportunities below. All of these pathways are open at the same time from the first year onward, and there is no required order. Students may start with one of these pathways and benefit from the others over time.

1. Join a team: To take part in the work carried out in departmental laboratories and research centers, a good first step is to review faculty members’ research areas and contact them with a personalized e-mail.

2. Write your own project: The AdımODTÜ Undergraduate Research Program, established with donations from METU alumni and friends, supports undergraduate students’ research projects. The program does not require an advisor. For detailed information, please visit adimodtu.org.tr.

3. Apply for funding: In the TÜBİTAK 2209-A and 2209-B programs, the student is the project coordinator, and an academic advisor is mandatory. 2209-B is industry-oriented and requires an industry advisor in addition to the academic advisor. Applications are submitted through ebideb.tubitak.gov.tr.

4. Become a scholarship holder: Students may take part in TÜBİTAK and BAP projects carried out by faculty members, or receive a monthly scholarship under the TÜBİTAK 2247-C STAR program. For this pathway, students should first contact the faculty member leading the project.

5. Work in R&D: Technology companies within ODTÜ TEKNOKENT offer internships and part-time R&D positions. Software, data science and artificial intelligence are among the areas in which these positions are concentrated.

We wish all our students success.
